SESSION FIVE

Leading the Independent School: 10 Skills for Success
Presenter: David Peterson, Consultant and Trainer, NorthShore Learning

Independent school leaders are the driving force in the design and implementation of strategies that lead to strong schools that prepare students to thrive in a changing world. Skillful leaders enhance the school’s ability to provide a high-quality education for students and to create a positive work culture for staff members.

By embracing the 10 Skills for Success, the participants will:

  • Develop an enhanced executive presence, one that demonstrates competence, courage, and compassion in leading the independent school.
  • Increase leadership capacity by acquiring new skills for developing a vision and mission for leadership, setting direction for others, and empowering staff to develop their skills and abilities.
  • Become an effective decision maker by determining the relative importance of a decision, assessing the risks and rewards of various options, considering relevant sources of data, and communicating the rationale for decisions to independent school stakeholders.
  • Create a positive culture for learning in their independent school, one that is characterized by a high level of trust among the adults, and a sense of respect and cooperation among students.
  • Develop a healthy work-life balance through managing time effectively. “The head of school role is immersive and all-consuming, demanding incredibly long hours and even greater emotional energy.” (The Independent School, Summer, 2022, 76.)

Participants in this webinar will develop skills to view the emotional demands of their headship as a dilemma to be managed, not a problem to be solved.
